<< Installing IDE RAID on a Abit VP6 Motherboard running all SCSI >>
Would be like running a DDR motherboard with both DDR and SDR...
IDE RAID will NEVER be as fast as a single good SCSI disk... If you want to invest in something, invest in another SCSI disk...
Using the onboard software RAID is not wise, unlike SCSI drives IDE drives have no processor, so IDE disks rely on CPU power, that is the first problem with the solution, of course, several IDE disks use even more CPU cycles... Then you use the SW RAID on your motherboard, it has no processor of it's own either, so there will be a lot more CPU cycles required just to run that setup...
If this is not enough, then consider the seek times, usually that is the biggest problem if you are not just copying big files that is, the seek times of any IDE drive is slower than any 10k SCSI drive, and when you use RAID the seek time is increased considerably...
Buy a faster SCSI drive instead...
