installing hyperthreading chip into existing win xp install

im running windows xp pro currently with a 2.26 ghz P4 and am upgrading to a 3.06 ghz P4 to take advantage of hyperthreading and im wondering if i would be better off with a clean install of win xp pro or can i just pop the chip in and have it rock? id rather not have to reformat as ive got a good install right now and really dont want to mess with it if i dont have to. opinions/suggestions greatly appreciated.

You may have to change your HAL depending on which one is currently in use.

Yeah never tried adding a CPU to an existing install - The machine will probably boot fine not sure that it will see the extra proc though. Reinstall will fix it I'm sure though.

put it in, goto bios and enable Hyper Threading, boot it up. Push contro lalt delete and goto the cpu spot, if it has 2 graphs, then you got hyper threading, if not, reinstall windows.

A repair install should be sufficient if its not detected automatically.

I am in the same situation. I want to swap out my cpu and was wondering if you could just swap without reinstalling xp. I'd like to know what your results were.

i just put the new chip in this afternoon, booted and it told me the HAL had changed and xp rebooted and came back with no issues with the hyperthreading working just fine
