Installing First CPU to mobo...Need help-tips!

I got myself an Athlon XP 1900+, the Asus 220D nForce MATX board, and a Volcano 7 HSF, I also bought a shim to put on top of the CPU...

This will be the first time I've ever installed a CPU before.

I've read through the installation techniques from thermaltakes website along with AMD's website, but still have a few questions...

Since this is my first time, is it very easy to crack the core while putting the HSF on?

With the Shim on, will it be hard to crack the core?

Do I just take the peeling off the bottom of the HSF and pop it on the CPU and then secure the little clip on the socket?

What do they mean by "not applying direct pressure on the HSF?" How do i put it on the CPU without doing this???

Since I won't be overclocking, should I use my Artic Silver instead of the standard stuff that's underneath the thing I peel off or should I just use the standard stuff?

And any other tips if you have any please 🙂 Thanks so much!

Arctic Silver will provide better cooling than the pad.

Just remove the pad from the HS&F, put a small dab of AS on the core spread it thin and evenly.

Then put on your shim, then the HS&F. The only real pressure should be placed on the 2nd clip you are attaching to the motherboard. Sometimes they require a good amount of pressure to get attached.

With the shim in place, it will be much harder to crack/chip the core of the processor IMHO.

Hope this helps you 🙂

won't pressure be added to the CPU when I drop the HSF on to the core(where im spreading the AS)???

or do I kind of lightly drop it on there?

Don't drop it on, just gently place the HSF on top of the CPU. You'd have to use a fair amount of force to damage the core. Just take your time and carefully follow the instructions, you should be fine.

My first experience installing a CPU and heatsink was with an Athlon XP 1700+ and a Thermaltake Volcano 7. I don't really like the clip design of the V7 as it takes quite a bit of force to get it seated properly. My suggestion is to use a flatheat screwdriver with a short shaft, which allows you to control the head more easily. Just keep pushing the clip down until it can clear the lug and slide it in. Keep applying pressure until you know for certain that the clip has engaged the lug, otherwise it may snap away and possibly break the lug in the process.
