Installing Drivers

In Windows 98, I was used to installing drivers by deleting the old ones, installing generic VGA drivers, then loading the new drivers. Currently I have a Radeon 9800 running in XP. My old method does not work anymore; even when I "uninstall all ATI software," the original drivers get installed, and there's no way to install a generic VGA driver. Neither can I uninstall the old drivers, then go to Safe Mode and install the new drivers there. Any recommendations as to how I should fix this? Could I move any files that would prevent the original drivers from automatically loading?

(It's should be obvious from the post that I don't build my own computers.)

I would simply ignore it. Trying to fight WinXP itself, and force it not to use its baseline Radeon drivers when they're embedded in the OS's driver arsenel... 😱 I'd just take the straightforward approach, install the latest ATI drivers and call it done.

Your use of the word "Fight" led me to anthropomorphize Windows XP in my mind; strange images appear. Maybe I could make a movie about this....

You could check Driver Cleaner out and see if it helps.
