installing both Win XP & Win 98 on the same PC.

Right now I'm running Win XP. There is a program I want to use that for the life of me I can't get to run. So I want to put 98 on my PC and dual boot. I know it's pretty basic installing XP on a system that already has 98, but what about the other way around? I plan to install 98 on the same HD but a different partition (C, my XP is on D) am I safe to assume that installing 98 will screw up the XP boot loader? If anyone has a suggestion with a decent way to go about doing this.

thanks...

forgot to add, XP Pro is installed on D: which is FAT32. I have read some info on how to install 98 after xp, but nothing with XP on the D partition. Not sure how that effects things.

thanks again

If it was me, I would personally install Win98SE first, and then install WinXP after cause it will format a partition and create the boot menu for you after.
That would be the easiest solution and then you will have the option on what OS to boot with upon startup.

I would leave yourself enough room for the FAT32 area so that Win98/XP will both have access to the files, and keep WinXP as NTFS for everything else.

I would probably not do this if you have much more than 512megs of ram though cause Win98 doesn't work well with much more ram.

That wouldn't be easy, well it wouldn't be hard. but a lot of work. Cos then I would have to reinstall XP, which I have spent months screwing up by modding it (Litestep, LogonUI etc) hummmm maybe this is going to be more work then I'm ready to get into.

I did install a boot manager, OSL2000 maybe with that I can just toss 98 on and keep XP intact, and even throw Linux on for the hell of it *shrug*

Well, I have tried that b4.

The easiest solution is to use PartitionMagic Pro 8.0 (I think you would be able to find it in Kazaa ;-) )
It can manage harddrive parition very easy.
Use it to create a partition after your current windows xp partition.

And select the partition you just created during the windows xp partition.

After all, I dont if you know this method or not, you can decide which mode a program should run, like you can choose whether run in winodws 95, windows 98/ME, windows 2000.
The method is described as below:

Right click the icon which you want to run the program>> click properties>> Compatibility>> Compatibility mode>> check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for:">> choose the version which you prefer the program to run with>> click "OK"

Hope this reply help you

That is a good idea, I already have 2 partitions, and XP is on D:... I know 98 has certain files that install to C: regardless. I think my problem will lay in the fact that if you install 98 AFTER XP you run into problems with getting it to boot both. As for compat. mode I tried that for the proggy that won't run in XP and no dice. It's something else in my XP setup that is screwing with it I suppose.
