Installing BIOS... ***SOLVED***

I have a Chaintech VNF4 Ultra Zenith VE.

I went to chaintech's website and downloaded the latest BIOS.

As soon as the download was done, I unpacked it. then i was left with a '*.bin' file..

now, how do i use this?

The utility section has a 'flasher'

bin == Binary.

Create a bootable floppy or cdrom w/ bios flash utility on it. The boot with the disk and flash.

or maybe look for another flash utility that works in xp?

i was looking around the chaintech much deeper, and found a instructional page for BIOS update.

it suggests

The FLASH utility can only work well when there are no memory drivers or other TSR's installed. It is recommended to start up your system from a floppy disk which only has the system (for example COMMAND.COM) on it or (under windows 95, DOS 6.22, etc.) press F4/5 to bypass the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS startup files.

now, the problem is... i don't have floppy drive..
will i be able to make boot disk with CD?
and where the heck can i get DOS?

I think creating a bootable cdrom is on a whole other level of complexity compared to a floppy. I've never tried it but there are tons on guides on the internet. If you had a floppy drive though, you'd have to right-click on the drive in my computer click format and check the box that says create an ms-dos startup disk then format. Copy the flash utility and bin file to the disk and reboot with the disk in the drive. Then just run the flash utility from the command prompt. The cdrom process may be similar, but I can't comment on that. GL

You should have a floppy drive if you are capable of fitting one in your case since BIOS flashes work best in DOS (for motherboards or video cards if you're very adventurous).

Windows flashes of key hardware is risky and frequently ends up in failure.

You can make a bootable CD but that would mean you'd need to burn a new CD every time you want to flash the BIOS... Even with CD-RW's its a much bigger hassle than just using floppy discs.

i took out my old floppy drive from garage, found a floppy diskett,
made bootable dos, with flash program and 'bin' file

flashed, working great.
