installing ati linux driver (suse10.0) issue and problem

I recently installed the ATI driver version 8.18.8
followed the instructions as listed in ATI's online instruction page for "new install"
but I get this error when I try to set my displays in YAST:

(intial click on "Hardware/Graphics card and Monitors")
"Cannot deactivate all displays
at least one display must be active"

so I press OK and enter the Graphics card and Monitors page
I see that my monitor is not selected to I select Samsung SyncMaster 955SL(T)
press OK
set my resolution to 1600x1200 and 24-bit color

I see that the "activate this display" checkbox is selected at the top of the configure page, so I think "all's good" so I press OK.

DIalog box pops up saing "test" "save" or "cancel"
(testing fails and kinda crashes my system...won't let me back into GUI or console)...so I press save:

SO i think all's good. BUt to be sure it doens't kill my video like last time I attemped this, I go back to "graphics card and monitors" and sure enough, it gives me the same damn error
"Cannot deactivate all displays
at least one display must be active"

--------------------------^^^----------------------------

If i go ahead and restart X as ATI recommends, it fails and I'm stuck in console mode. Something about "no monitor selected" and I have to replace the modified xorg.conf file with the xorg.conf.saxsave one and I'm back to square one.

Can anyone help this linux newb?

BTW< my card is the x800xl in case this is an issue
