installing and testing a cisco router

ok guys, i have a cisco router 2501 im selling over in the sell/trade forum, but i need to set it up and test it to check memory and all that stuff...i know nothing about them, so if anyone can give me a hand doing that, it would be reallly cool of you

Power it up and watch thru the console. It will test the mem and proc during the POST and output any errors. Do you have any cables to do some serial throughput testing? You can configure it as a router on your network since it has an ethernet port, so push a big ftp transfer through it. Need more specifics? Spidey has a strange affinity for the 2500 series, so I'm sure he will have something to add. 😉

Basically if it powers up without any errors it will probably outlive us all.

well, thats the thing, i dont know what to hook it up to or anything, i have no idea about these things...i dont even know how to get it hooked up to my computer

Do you have any of the cables or adapters that came with it? Like the RJ45-to-DB9 adapter or a black or light blue rolled RJ45 cable? You will need these items to get into the console port and watch it boot.

[edit: This link from Cisco might help]

take a DB9-to-RJ45 serial connecter and attach it to a serial port on your PC or terminal.
Then connect router to this with a rolled RJ45 cable.
Set terminal or term software to 9600 8N1 and power up router.

you can watch diags and also record mem and flash and software version

ughhh...i have no idea what any of that what was that you guys wrote...im totally network dumb..you have to understand, i had someone install my nic card for me...i have no idea what to do with it....i wish someone would just buy it from me...lol hint hint
and no, i dont have the cables, only thing i have is a power cable for it...

my company just upgraded the whole network, routers included, and i begged and pleaded until i got em, i dont have a use for em, but i figured it was cisco, so what the hell..i have the cisco one, some sort hewlett packard 10/100 switch, and a larscom access-t thingy...

You need to get into the router and erase the config. Somebody could buy it and crack the passwords and use that and other information on it to compromise your company's network.

[edit: maybe you can take it back to a network guy at your company and ask him to wipe it if he hasn't already]

oh, well that cant be good...i need to get ahold of those connectors, so i can hook it up to my system and do all that...ughhh...being poor sucks

{edit: holy sh*t..i hadnt even thought about that...good idea...but i still need to check it out soon since people are interested in it}
