Installing an OS w/o an optical/floppy drive

My friend wants to purchase a slim line notebook to use for taking notes in class. Nothing fancy, just enough to do word processing. Problem is, he is looking at some Toshiba Notebooks that generally come with a docking station that contains a CD-ROM or floppy drive, but the ones he's looking at have no docking station.

How would I go about installing an OS? I have a USB floppy drive, and can get access to a USB CD-ROM.

Thanks for the help

any other ideas?

Pop HDD out of laptop, put it (with 2.5" -> 3.5" IDE converter) into desktop, and install OS that way. That's a lot of work, though. He really needs to buy a USB CDROM drive, or he'll need a 2000/2003 Server box nearby with RIS for PXE-based setup, and that's a lot of work for the uninitiated too.

I know this is not what you want to hear but it's an easier approach not to mention can be handy in case of emergency. Get an external usb cd or dvd rom. Use it for installation and leave it behind. This is with the assumption your system can detect USB legacy drives and boot from it.
