Installing an OS Question

I'm trying to install Win2k, and I posted about it earlier. The problem is, the floppy drive is broken and I don't have a spare. Is there a possible way to boot up without a boot disk, I have formatted the computer already and have the CDs that I need, but I'm not sure exactly what to do now (all I've got left to do is get the OS on the computer).

Is it possible to get it to recognize the CD-rom without a bootdisk? I'm open to any and just about all suggestions (except those saying down with MS and don't install Win2k jargain).

Thanks,
Picky

If you're CD ROM is bootable it ought to work just fine. The Win2K CD is certainly bootable. Just set it up in the BIOS to boot from the CD ROM ought to be fine.

It doesn't recognize the CD-rom, I don't think, is there somewhere in the BIOS that I can make it auto-detect it (or force it)?

Thanks again,
Picky

That's what I'm saying: you may have to change the boot sequence to include the CD ROM as a bootable device. Go into your BIOS and take a look. Any mobo manufactured after 1997 should have that option.

Damaged told you what you need to do. Go into BIOS, under Advanced BIOS, where it says First Boot Device, change it to CD-ROM. Save, exit.

Is this and IDE CD ROM or not? If it's SCSI you'll, well, we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. If not, then what kind of CD ROM is it?

I'm not up to par on the different Asus boards, but I believe that's a slot a mobo, right? All I can tell you it to check your manual. If you don't have the manual handy, go to Asus' web site.

How can you tell if it's IDE... I don't really know how.

Thanks, and sorry about these stupid questions,

Umm, do you have a SCSI host controller? I'm betting no. So, it's IDE. You're gonna have to reference the manual for how to set that. You can always get the manual at www.asus.com. It's in .pdf form so you'll need Acrobat to read it.

It's a Slot A Motherboard, and I'm downloading the manual now.

Now that I think about it, it must be IDE, since it is recent and a good speed, 50x.

I hope the manual tells me how to get that stupid CD-rom working.

Thanks again,
Picky

No offense, but I'd bet my Plextor 40X kicks that 50X's a$$. SCSI rules! Host controller prices suck though. 🙂

I just need it for the install speed, and since most CDs don't run at that speed, since no one pays for 40x CDs, it doesn't really matter anyway. 🙂

I can live with it.

I made sense of it all and finally freaking got my Floppy working! Seems some of the wires fell out... 🙂
