Installing Alpha on Socket A

Can someone please tell me the correct way to assemble the Alpha.

The fan has a YS Tech label on one side and a Globalwin label on the other, which side goes up?

Is the fan supposed to suck the air away for from the HSF or blow the air on the HSF?

Heh, good question.

It's a little argumentable but some say that having the fan blow down toward the heatsink will perform better. I also have an alpha PAL35 with the fastest 60mm fan I could find. (6800rpms!!) I have it blowing upwards, but I think Iam going to do some test in the near future to confirm which way is better.

About which way it blows, if its a 3 prong connector, simply plug it into the motherboard, start it up for a second and feel with your hand. If its a 4 prong connector, plug it into a power supply cable, unplug the motherboard power cable, and again feel with your hand which way it blows.

Pretty much, you can't go wrong.

Definitely have it sucking because Alpha designed it that way. So you should have that Y.S. Tech label up.

tonyou, that is incorrect. In their FAQ Alpha addresses the issue and basically says that it depends. Generally, Alphas suck. However, there are situations where you would want them to blow. Read the link I posted.

dszd0g, thanks for the heads up. I guess I shouldn't say that you must position the fan to suck, but rather recommend it if there are no other hot source around the CPU?

The FAQ at Alpha's site did mention that they designed their heatsink to suck with the shroud, so at least I got that correctly, right?

I set mine up blowing.

I have it on the underside on an A7v and it blows the air straight through and into the PS which is on suck.
