I'll explain a little first...

My cousin is looking to replace his VooDoo2 with a VD3. He had the VooDoo2 installed a while ago along with the 4Meg. In looking at the DeviceManager, the VooDoo is installed not under "display adapters", but is installed under "Sound, Video, and Game controllers." Isn't that a bad thing?

The mobo in the Compaq (*cough hack*) has some sort of 4MB video card built right onto it. Apparently, the VooDoo takes over at some point, but we can't tell just when. Obviously Thief is running on the VooDoo, but the display adapter for Windows is listed as some sort of Rage (the 4Meg is a rage?! Ouch). Should we change the main display adapter to be the VooDoo? Is that possible with the built-in?

When he gets the VooDoo3, and I pull the VD2, can I setup the VD3 to be the main display adapter, or do I need to have that cheap-ass piece 4MB again?

You can probably disable the onboard video-adapter in the BIOS. Else I suggest that you use a different mainboard.

The Voodoo 2 should be listed under Sound, Video, and Game controllers. This is correct and normal. It IS a video controller, right? ;)

The Voodoo 2 will take over at any time 3D functions are called for within a game. You can tell because usually the screen will change refresh rates for a moment. The Voodoo 2 is a 3D only card and has no 2D/Windows functions.

A Voodoo 3 is a combined 2D/3D card....you will need to disable the onboard ATi Rage....either through the BIOS, or a jumper on the motherboard.

swapping out the mainboard is out of the question. My cousin is an ex-Marine with a very serious anger problem. He knows next-to-nothing about computers, but thinks he can build them. (an extreme version of me. But atleast I'm learning!)

Anyway, disabling it wouldn't be a bad idea, thanks! :)

ok first things first..

a voodoo and voodoo2 card are 3d only add-on cards, that means they need another video card to do the 2d stuff, (the biult in 4mb video on the motherboard takes care of 2d).

a voodoo3 is both a 2d/3d card. you will need to disable the onboard 4mb video and run just the voodoo3.

does this help?
