installing a telephone

I have a wire coming out of my wall, do any of you know how to install a jack? I think I could do it on my own, is it too complex? I'd rather do it on my own, than call the phone company.

the wires and the connections on the back of the plate are color coordinated. You can easily do it yourself.

Great, I see a big wire, with a few smaller colored ones, what should I buy at...radio shack?

duh, a wall-mounted phone jack 😕

a big wire and a few smaller ones? You sure it's a phone line? Phone line should have 4 or 6 colors wires in there. You just match them up to a Phone wall jack and then you can plug the phone into it. You need a punch down tool or you can try it by hand. But just punch down the wires onto the bracket type things on the back of the wall plate.

Pic of the cable?

Not home, i'll post one next time...maybe it is six wires, it's been a while since I looked in that room. I know a phone goes there, it has to be, it's not a power line, so what else could it be?

😛 Yup. I didn't think it was going to be easy when I did it, but I was pretty happy when I walked in to Radio Shack and said "I have phone cords sticking out of the wall and I need a jack to wire them to" and they handed me a wall-mounted phone jack.

Heh. Go figure! Cost?

All you'll need is a screwdriver to screw down the posts that close the connections in the jack and a knife to slightly/gently strip the wiring.

yeah it may be more than 2 line wire. red and green are the first line and yellow and black are secondary line (or aux power for some weird phones). you wight want to unplug your line from the box before you hook it up. you can get shocked, not much of a zap but annoying none the less.

oh and you'll want 22 guage wire strippers too or a knife if you can do it that way. i prefer strippers if i don't have any give in my line in case i screw up. and needle nose pliers will make it a lot faster going.
