Installing a new graphics card...

Been awhile... Need some pointers...

I think it's like this:

1) Boot machine

2) uninstall driver

3) shut down machine

4) Pull old video card

4) Boot into safe mode

5) Run driver cleaner, etc to get rid of residue

6) shut off machine

7) Install new card

8) Reboot and install updated driver for card.
 
u wont be able to boot without inserting the new video card first,

put ur step 4 after ur step 6.
insert a step before #1 which is : download new video card drivers

And if you're upgrading within the same manufacturer family of cards (nVidia or AMD) I've never seen an issue with just uninstalling old drivers, swap cards, install newest drivers over the top of the old ones.

But that's personal experience so if you like driver cleaner go for it.
 
I agree with Denithor. It feels like I have been on a "GPU merry-go-round" with the changes in my machine's gpus over the past year (8800GT, 8800GTS, GTX 260, GTX 260 C216, soon to be GTX285).

Just uninstall the driver, shut down, remove old card, install new card, boot up, and install the new drivers. This assumes you are sticking with the same company (ATI or Nvidia).

Driver cleaner is recommended if you are going from one company to the other and want to be 100% sure you get a good install.
 
For Nvidia cards, I don't think it's even worth uninstalling the old drivers. Just shut down the computer, take the old card out and insert the new one and everything is fine. I don't know what happens with ATi. But if you're changing from ATi to Nvidia or backwards then you need to do all those 8 steps above with LUISSSS correction. 😉

Only if the same drivers are provided for both the old and new cards. Double check Nvidia's website. But yes, I was also able to do this.
