Installing a new graphics card

Tomorrow I will be installing my first AGP graphics card Yes, you read that right! Under device manager-display adapters-Via S3G(it's onboard graphics), on the general tab at the bottom is says, "device usage". What should I check? enable, or disable? I will then uninstall the drivers.
I'll look around the bios too. What for, I'm not to sure, but I'm gonna look anyways.

right before you install the card

1.disable old S3 drivers
2.turn of computer
3.install card
4.hook monitor to new card
5.turn computer on
6.go into bios
7.in bios set graphics from onboard to AGP
8.boot windows in safe mode and install cards drivers just to be careful


dont forget to ground youreself before touching anything and try not to work on carpet

Just curious, what card did you get?

A visiontek 9250. After rebate it was only $45. It's not for gaming, I want to use Keyhole and nasa's world wind programs.
I know to uninstall the drivers, but do I set the device to disable? Also since I'm using shared RAM, should I change that to zero in the BIOS?

i reckon in the BIOS there's prolly an option to disable onboard graphics and that should automatically disable the memory usage.... but really to upgrade from onboard to offboard all u gotta do is uninstall the drivers, disable in bios and install the new card... couldn't hurt to check system tab in control panel to see if all your ram is available too, afterwards

That was easier than I thought. I'm just having trouble trying to adjust to 1024*768, I actually liked 800*600. 85 mHrtz refresh.

My driver version for my visiontek 9250 is listed as 6.14.10.6490, how do I know if this is the latest driver? Should I go here, visiontek download Windows 2K/XP Display Driver 8.072 Cat 4.11, and then double click on W2KXP_8.072.exe? Should I uninstall the old drivers first and start this over?

go to ATI.com and download the latest drivers from the website


Cat 4.11 drivers are from november last year

the current version is 5.3

Since ATI says, "Low Speed(Dial-up) Display Driver File Size Dated Posted Additional Info
1 of 4 8.03 03/09/05 Version: 6.14.10.6517


and my driver version is 6.14.10.6490, doesn't that mean I should have Cat version 5.3? Or is the ending, 490 and 517 the big differance? I'm not downloading the control center because I read it's a POS.

Catalyst drivers are released once a month. Cat 4.11 were released in Nov last year, 5.3 = March this year. Get 5.3.
