I have a socket 939 AMD 64 3000 in my PC right now. I bought an OEM AMD X2 3800 socket 939 from tigerdirect.

do I simply replace the cpu? do I need special glue or something? I am gonna use the existing fan that came with my previous CPU. please advise.

Thanks.

you're going to need a Thermal Interface Material (TIM) such as Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) or MX-1. Then you will also need at least 90% Isopropyl Alcohol (91% available at CVS if you've got them around you) and a synthetic cloth gauze (or similar) also available at CVS or like.

Then you clean your CPU and Heatsink with the Isopropyl, careful not to get fingerprints or lint or threads or anything on it. Then place the AS5 in a small dot a little smaller than a pea on the center of the cpu, and squash it down with the heatsink, rotate a few degrees in each direction, and then bolt down the heatsink and ENJOY!

EDIT:::: BTW, Google, and the Search function are your best friends.

well, there may be enough thermal interface material on the old HS that it won't overheat too badly, but it could overheat and throttle, or just shut down. there may be airbubbles in the TIM so it might not make good contact. you're going to want to find a Temperature Monitor for your processor (Use Google) and check your temperature and then buy some AS5.

That the load temp? If it is, might as well leave it for now and keep monitoring it.

yeah, well I d/l speedfan, but I can't tell which temp is for the CPU...

it's dual core, and so I assume it reads to temps...but there's like temp 1 temp 2 and temp 3, and I can't tell which is which....

I made a mistake! It's at 52 C!

My A silver won't be here for another week. It's still running though. Is this going to damage my computer?

Which kind of HSF do you recommend for my 939
amd x2 3800?

I don't want to spend more than $50

Please someone tell me that 52 C is "OK" for now...

OK, good. The thermal grease should be here next week...

How do I really know that my dual core is making a difference? I can't tell if it's any faster than my previous AMD64 3000 CPU...

any HSF recommendations in my price range?

Did you go to the AMD site and download the dual core optimizer? Microsoft also has a hot fix for dual core systems.

Fingerprints == oil == worse heat transfer. You'll want to clean the top of any CPU before applying thermal paste and the HSF.

Uhh, I guess you could if you wanted to, but they'd need to be unpowdered. You don't really need gloves, just hold the CPU from the sides (that way you're neither touching the cap or the contacts).
