Installing a new asus p5vdc-x motherboard with pentium D 805 CPU

I just bought a Pentium D 805 to go with an asus p5vdc-x motherboard. The motherboard is an ultra atx motherboard. This can be put in a normal atx case right?

Also, I put in the CPU fine and have the memory in and am doing a test to make sure it will turn on. I see the light turn on, but that is only when I press down on the power cable just a tad.

Shouldnt the motherboard turn on with the CPU fan spinning at least without anything else plugged in, or will it not do anything until I plug in everything else. What are the minimal components I need in there to test and make sure it would work.

If the light is on the green led on the motherboard, this should mean everything is fine for startup right? Its been a while since I installed these from scratch so I dont really remember the minimal parts of the setup needed for initial bootup without anything attached to it.

I have tried two power switches and I press them in with the light on and nothing happens. What are some things I could try to do to fix this?

Press down on the power cable = ???
... I'm going to asume you ment power button, and asume you mean the indicator light on the front of the computer case; the light should turn on and stay on without holding down the button.

Make sure your cpu fan is plugged into the motherboard. (in the correct spot)
Have a stick of ram in.
Have a video card in and plugged into a monitor.
When it boots up you should see the motherboard logo screen then get a message that says something like "an OS was not found".
If you get that screen then everything is good. You should be able to get into the BIOS to set everything up.

Then plug in the hard drive so you can install windows..

What light? did you pull these power switches out of some computer cases?

Are they plugged in correctly? Are you putting this together inside of a computer case or on a table?

Now, I have to press down on the corner by where all the leads are for the power switch to plug into, reset switch and that two line of pins there. I need to physically press the motherboard just slightly into the case

It seems like something is shorting out because I need to press it down to the case ever so slightly or else the led light on the motherboard does not come on indicating it is receiving power properly.

What I am doing is putting this in a spare case that I had around. I had to get a new power switch for the last motherboard I had in this case so that is the switch I am using. It starts to boot, but only if I press down on the motherboard into the case then all the fans and everything starts up including CPU and case fans indicating the power is working. If I dont press this down into the case it doesnt work. How ultra atx is the width is just too short so it doesnt reach to the last set of spacers in the case closest to the front of the case. This is why I press it down and it works. I have no idea why this is happening and it doesnt seem like thats the way it is supposed to be. Ive never had an ultra atx motherboard before, is there something i am missing in this?

I'm not sure..

Make sure it isn't a short in the wires themselves. (maybe pushing on the motherboard is moving the wires..?)

I've read about some scenarios where the screws that where holding the motherboard in where grounding the motherboard. Make sure those screws are directly in the center of the screw-holes and not touching anything else. Trying tightening or loosening them.

It may be a problem with the motherboard which I'm sure you've suspected. Double make sure you have the power button plugged in correctly. (maybe the circuitry behind the power on-off switch works differently than what an ultra-atx motherboard uses.. if the case is for an atx board... I doubt it but who knows?)

Good luck.
