they are both SATA.I have a desktop that is SATA could I hook up the old drive to it and copy onto that hard drive?

okay, you're replacing the laptop drive? can i ask was this a upgrade in size or was there an issue and you felt replacing the drive was necessary?

upgrade in size my old one was only 100gb this one is 160GB
both are 2.5" SATA drives
I want to copy my old one to the new one

Burn a bunch of DVD's then. 😛

Or, you could use a desktop on the network.

Or, you could get an external enclosure for your 160 and transfer the data that way.

Forget the DVDs. You will end up with a lot of DVDs and the end result will not boot. Get an external SATA drive case for your new 2.5, then connect it to the laptop by USB. Use TrueImage 11 (Acronis) and CLONE the old drive to the new drive. Then switch drives and boot. No problem. I do it every month.

You could put both drives in a desktop, but copy will not work. You must CLONE or it will not boot.

I always liked ghost 2003 because there is no software to install. Just pop in the floppy or cd, boot to it, and everything always works.

Keep in mind that images are not bootable. They have to be restored in orfder to get all the boot goodies in the correct place on the drive. Cloning is always better for that purpose. Cloning is best when done with a bootable CD so the OS is not involved.

If it is not bootable, it is not overall easier because you are not there yet. If you want freewarem, use the software provided by the drive's OEM. It will create a DUPLICATE drive that is all ready to use (bootable.)

it may not be bootable but is a lot easier to use and the software is Freeware.
You're definately right about the price...but that's about it.
OP, your drive needs cloned. The cheapest way is to use your drive manfgs. clone utility and a 2.5" enclosure connected to the lappie for the swap.
The smart thing to do, would to be buy Acronis for the cloning job and continue using it for your backups.
Either way, you can reuse the enclosure with your old HDD for storage and backups.

Good Luck!

Do these that boot from a cd support copying from or to a usb drive?
I know Acronis will. Check your HDD manfg. page for some kinda downloadable tools. Who is the manfg. of your new drive?
