hey guys,

i'm fairly new to the whole linux thing. i have it installed on my laptop, it's a sony vaio pcg-sr33. i'm using mandrake 9.0...

anyways, my laptop has no floppy just an external cd rom. right now i'm trying to figure out out to install the drivers for my ethernet adapter. it's a Kingston EtheRx IC PC Card.

i tried searching for it..and found a page of network card drivers and stuff...but uhhh, i'm just really confused. hehe. can somebody help me find what exactly i need? and from what i understand, i will have to burn it onto a cd before i can install it on my laptop..but i don't really know how to install stuff on linux. can somebody really nice and patient help me out..or give me hints/tips. either post in here or hit me up on aim: dustofconfusion.

thanks for anyone that helps!!!

You will need to install the proper modules for the NIC. I think the Kingstons are typically RealTek Chips...so look from the RTLXXXX module.

What kernel are you using ? Do you already have the kernel source ?

Try this post in the Operating Systems forum, you'll get help there. I have no clue how to help you... when I installed Mandrake 9.0, my PCMCIA NIC was found and configured automatically.

For supported devices, PCMCIA support under Linux is plug-n-play. You don't download or compile any drivers except in some less common instances. You do usually have to configure the PC card a bit, but I can't specifically address how Mandrake 9.0 does things. After this minimal configuration, the OS will call the appropriate scripts at boot time to activate PC card devices.

However, historically the PCMCIA subsystem was a wholly separate entity from the standard kernel. Linux 2.4 integrated PCMCIA support, but the old subsystem is still somewhat of a de facto standard.
