installing a modem in Linux Mandrake 8.0?

I want to install a modem in my Linux box but I am unsure on what I need to do...I guess that I have become to dependent upon Plug-N-Play! Does anyone know of a good site to refer me to ?

I just started messin' with Linux.

Try http://www.linmodems.org for drivers and more info.

The drivers there for a Lucent LT I have laying around won't install so I am stumped at the moment. Looking to lay hands on a hardware modem to make the install easier.

This is about all the help I can give you. I don't know jack about Linux.
