i am installing a dvd drive into a computer that has a cd writer already into it...i am running win2k and my motherboard is an iwill xp333-r

when i install the dvd into the same ide ribbon as the cdrom drive it screws up my audio and i have no sound except for the cd rom...mp3s, videos and anything else makes no sound...in this setup i have the audiocable hooked up from the cdrom to the motherboard but no audiocable from the dvd drive to motherboard

so to test the dvd and make sure it's working i just have the ide cable hooked up to the dvd drive and the audio cable into the dvd to motherboard...the cdrom drive is completely unplugged...in this set up the sound is fine and everything works

since i only have one available audio port on the motherboard this is making me believe that i may need a 2 to 1 audio cable splitter to hook up both drives to the motherboard...is this right? and do they even sell these types of things? also i always thought in win2k you don't even need the audio cables and that the sound is processed through the ide ribbon

anybody have any ideas on what's wrong or what i should do?

it is my understanding that you must have an audio cable connected to the devices to play cds and stuff. as for the splitter, someone else will have to assist you with that. my motherboard has 3 audio hookups.

I assume the CD Writer is set as the master & the DVD as the slave? You shouldn't need to even have the audio cables hooked up to your sound card to get them to play. Put it this way, I don't have any of the audio cables hooked up to my sound card. Both play (yes, with sound). I had previously thought it was necessary to connect these until I found out otherwise.

Did you enable digital CD audio in device manager?... There should be two tick boxes: one for the CD and one for the DVD-Rom.
