Installing a computer in the car... questions...

I've been thinking about this for some time already. I know it sounds a little nuts but I wonder if anyone has done it. This is what I wish to do...

I want to build a fast desktop with enough memory using the smallest desktop case I could find. The main idea would be to have at least four HD's for storage of MP3's, DVD?s and also use the system with a GPS system (a USB GPS receiver goes for around $100.00). I already have an idea as to how to control the unit from inside the car (the unit would be inconspicuously mounted inside the trunk).

My biggest dilemma is connecting the video to an in-dash TFT monitor. Most of them run on NTSC system. Is it possible to use some sort of adapter which would allow such a connection?

Another thing would be connecting the computer to the car?s power system. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that it is against the law in most states to have a television set that is visible to the driver for obvious reasons.
 
Well, these guys link did it and I tested it in California for several months. In 150 degree parked car temperatures or the Cyrix chip the system fried. Seems as though there are laptop type TFT displays available that would fit your needs. <FWIW>
 
A good laptop with a 15+ inch LCD will do the job nice and be much more survivable in that environment. The display, however, should only be used by the driver when pulled over - otherwise the passenger is the operator. The human brain just doesn't multitask very well in traffic at 70 mph. 🙂

The constant vibration will kill your drives, etc., over time. Laptops are built for that - besides - they are easier to take into a motel when you stop for the night on a trip.

A more elegant GPS-based solution for an auto is On-Star. A heckuva lot cheaper than what you propose to do. The Acura MDX SUV has a GPS display in the dash. That's also very cool.
