my friend is trying to install winxp on his computer...its about 5 years old...he doesnt know the specs and i havent seen it...i think its like 92mb of ram p2 maybe? he had winxp just before but decided to format because of way to much spyware...now after formatting setup doesnt want to copy all files?...hd is about 8gb?
and suggestions? install a diff os?..he used NTFS maybe should install with FAT?

Google the minimum sys requirements for windows xp. I think its 256 mb. Simple answer: install win2k for that comp, however even that may be sluggish without at least 128 mb ram. Next answer: Find someone to sell you cheap used ram or buy a new mboard & memory. Older memory is priced at a premium and not worth it if you have to buy it new. Final answer: install windows 98 se and enjoy a speedy system that needs to reboot once a day.

I think the minimum system requirements for XP is like a 233MHz CPU and 64MB of RAM, but this is defenitely not reccomended. I reccomend at least 256MB of RAM and a much better CPU.

I have seen XP installed on a lot of "old" systems. If it worked before and isn't now, I am guessing you're getting that dark blue screen with the white text and something weird like "000xcd: exception blah blah"

I once got that error on a relatively new system. Tried it a bunch of times, didn't work. Then I took my RAM out of the sockets, cleaned them up a bit with my shirt (yeah, i'm careless) and blew some air in the sockets. Tried it again, it worked!!!

And yeah, XP does install on systems with 64MB of RAM. its not the fastest thing though

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up to much room.

His computer is waaaay too old for XP, doesn't meet requirements. He needs to go back to windows 98.
