installer crashing during setup

I have an older Toshiba laptop computer that I am trying to install XP on, the only issue is that every time I boot from the XP cd the system just shuts down midway through the initial file loading process. I am able to install Linux no problem using yumi and an ISO from a flash drive. I have a brand new external DVD drive and the computer has 2 g of ram with a AMD Turion 64 x2 CPU. I am also able to install xp as a guest within Ubuntu using Vbox as a virtual machine so I know the disc is good.
I have seen this problem once before when I tried to install XP onto a machine that I later found out had a chipped CPU. this CPU seems good though so I am at a loss.
please let me know what you think.
thank you
