Installed Xubuntu, what are must-have apps?

So I finally gotten down to installing Xubuntu on my ancient ThinkPad T41. Surprisingly wireless works much better than it ever did under XP. I've been out of the loop with Linux for years and have no idea what some of the good apps are. I need a PDF viewer, a simple picture viewer, a video player and a very lightweight music player (this machine has only 512MB RAM, so Banshee or Rhythmbox are out of the question). If you have any other nifty stuff to recommend then shoot away.

Most of that should be built in. I do like DeaDBeeF for music. I don't think that's in the repos yet.

Edit:
Here's some more things I like. Much of it is just dumb amusement...

cowsay
xcowsay
vrms
fortune-mod
xpenguins
gimp
calibre
vlc
