I installed xp pro on a computer w/out sp2 on it. Do I need to go to windows update and get all the updates before I can install sp2 which I did get their free disc?

I think sp2 includes a bunch of those updates. I'd just install sp2 and see what comes up on windows update afterwards.

You don't have to do any updates until after you install SP2. It would be redundant and unecessary since service packs are cumulative.

Upon installing WinXP SP2 there are eight "high priority" updates for the OS, IE6 and Outlook Express:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)
Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2005 (KB890830)
Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB887797)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175)

If you install Net framework ...there's
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

If you install Windows Media Connect ...there's
Update for Windows Media Connect

If you don't install Windows Media Player 10 there may be ones for previous WMP's

before going online make sure you turn on the windows firewall or any other firewall that you may have.

If you're behind IP NAT (home router, work router, whatever) then you can safely skip the firewall until you get everything updated. To find out if you're behind NAT, go to:

Start->Run and type in "cmd" and hit enter.
Then do "ipconfig".

Does your IP start with 192.168 or 10.0 or 172.16? If so and you trust the computers on your local network, you are all good to go without a firewall until you get updated. Running a software firewall in Windows is good sense even if you are behind a device that provides NAT so after the upgrade, start the firewall in SP2 or research other options.
