I installed XP Pro (no SP1) on a machine and there is no Java associated with Internet Explorer. I d/l and installed SP1a and that didnt fix it.

All my other machines have XP Pro sp1 and they all are fine (well, relatively :).

Whats the easiest way to correct this. D/l Java from Sun or do I need MS's virtual machine thingy.

Thanks in advance.

(funny, we bought all 4 copies of xp pro at the same time!)

MS took out their Java after they lost the lawsuit from Sun. The Sun one is far more up to date (The MS one is only compatible with Sun's v1.2 and lower), so that's the one I'd get.

Which would be more stable. The MS virtual machine implementation or Suns full Jave implementation?

(oh and thanks for all the replies!!)

Between those two there is only one of them that accurately executes java bytecode. That being Sun's JRE.

Of course there are many java applications that only run with the MS JVM and dont work with Sun's.... :|

This is why I have both

This is the CEO's machine and he doesnt even know what java is. I just want his browser to work as fluidly as possible (gives me time to do other work :)

So just as a part of IE, is there a clear choice? Cause I can just go, eenie, meenie,........

Ahh, gottit. I would go with the MS JVM, not because it is "better" per-se but just because it integrates with IE well and you wont have to deal with it. See my first post for a link.

EDIT: Just make sure to go to windows update after installing that, I think there was a security update released since the version I have.

And there's also a whole slew of applications written to spec that won't run on the MS JVM because it doesn't follow the standards correctly and because it is already 4 years out of date.

You can go round and round with this.

MS JVM executes some non-standard code, doesn't execute all standard code correctly, and doesn't execute some standard code period.

Sun JRE executes all things written to the specifications correctly.

The MS VM never went past Java 1.1.5. It is ludicrously obsolete but still commands a robust share of the browser applet VM market. :|
