Each laptop has its own proprietary drivers and means for those functions. You need to contact Compaq and get their XP upgrade stuff . . . sometimes you can download it. If you did a clean install, that is not good on a laptop unless you have all those things pre-arranged.
You will probably have a hard time finding XP support right now, but if it is available, try the W2K power utilities. That is what I did with my Toshiba 490XCDT laptop, and it works great.
