Installed Windows XP SP1, now Windows 2000 dual-boot fails to load. "\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" error...

Hi,

Can someone please help. I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 2000 & XP. Installed XP Service Pack 1 today and now everytime I select to boot Windows 2000 I get an error to do with "\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". Something about the file missing or corrupt. Never had this error before.

I does not look good as I do not have a recent backup. Is there anyway to restore Windows 2000 without reinstalling.

Very upset with Microsoft, why should an upgrade to XP affect my Windows 2000 bootup, unless it is one MAJOR coincidence.

Thanks for reading and for any help.

Check your BOOT.INI file to see if it has been changed. Make sure that your Windows 2000 installation is still listed there.

Thanks for the replies.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base article is useful only if you have a recent backup. My last backup was in April.

The problem however is now solved. I created another partition using Partition Magic and installed another copy of Windows 2000. Then somehow my existing Windows 2000 now boots, with all settings intact. Phew.

I have now deleted the new partition and everything is back to normal. I have now created a new ERD with a backup of the registry created in WINNT\repair\RegBack.

Asghar: Glad to hear that you were able to resolve your problem. That's really weird though.

I have a dual boot, WinXP and Linux. Fortunately, everything was okay after I installed SP1.

Thanks, and yes it is weird. I only installed a second copy of Windows 2000 to mess around with the system files and check various settings and then to my suprise I found that my original installation now booted. I am so lucky I did not have to format and reinstall as I had a lot of information and programs installed.

I now plan to backup the Registry\System Hive every week so if there is any future problem I can do a System restore which wil be up to date.
