Installed Windows Vista, weird problem with sound

My sound system will not work in 2 channel mode, only in 4 channel mode. But when it does work in 4 channel mode, I don't hear any sounds that would be directed through the main channel, just surround noise. If that makes sense?

With the stock drivers, it doesn't work at all. When I use the drivers from the Update Drivers in Device manager, it gives me the problem described above.

The audio chipset is Realtek AC97 onboard.

I checked Gigabyte's website, and the only driver listed is from 3 years ago.

vista and sound really sucks crap imo.

if you have onboard sound you can try updated drivers from the realtek website.
thats the only thing I can suggest.

I cant seem to find the solution to a problem I have though which is that vista is not able to output to spdif and headphones at the same time.
