installed win2k on xp laptop, having monitor problems. please help!

my pre-made, compaq presario 2110 laptop was getting really messed up and it needed a reinstall, but it didnt come with the cd to reinstall xp.. so i formated and installed win2k.
the first thing i noticed is the lcd screen only showed a small square in the middle of the screen as viewable.. during the whole install ect it did that. and i got display drivers, and it works fine if i hook up an external monitor.. but hangs in a black screen if i try to boot it using just the lcd... ...hopefully something similer happened to somebody...thanks..

hold the function key and press the button that switches between LCD and CRT. its usually one of the F keys at the top. it will allow you to switch between LCD, CRT or both*, and sometimes you get some really screwy side effects also 😛

i got them from the compaq site, and they installed fine.. and evrything seems like its working on the crt, but still getting problems using just the lcd.

yeah, and i also tried the Fn>f5 comand for switching displays, both screens flickered then the system crashed... i think.. it wasnt responding.

laptop. this is a driver problem, sometimes even if you head to the assembler's website (compaq, dell... whatever) and use their provided drivers it will give problems. I ran into this a lot at one of my previous jobs. open up the laptop, get the name of the video chipset and find a driver for it or try device manager if you dont want to open the case. if there's nothing seriously worng with the laptop, its safe to say its a drvier thing. the problem you speak of was a common thing for the old s3 chipsets we had. but after testing multiple drivers and you find that one, hang onto it. good luck.

its like saying your dell came with a geforce 2 video card. if you head to dell's website you can use their provided drivers or even the support xp set; or you can head to nvidia (the brains behind the geforce) and use their drivers.

i downloaded the newest radeon 7000 catylist drivers that supported my video chip but it seems like theres no change whatsoever, it says the card is working properly.. but still does the same thing. what i was thinking is just something wth the lcd screen, and the operating system.. but i have no idea..

Do you have all the necessary drivers installed for your mobo/chipset? Sound, lan, modem, etc? It seems like a driver problem, maybe win2k isn't recognizing your LCD or the fact that the primary video output should be the LCD of the laptop. Could you see if there is any way to set what is the primary video source in the BIOS? I know desktops allow you to set if you want the primary video to be PCI or AGP.
Is it still under warranty? You could try calling compaq, not sure how much it would help, but never hurts to try.
Sorry, those are the best suggestions I have so far.
