Installed SP2 on Server 2003 and now can't boot.

I have a Dell SC420 with the latest BIOS.

I install SP2 today and afterwards it just goes into an eternal reboot, it'll get to windows loading progress bar and then reboot.

I hit F8 and tried "disable automatic restart on system failure" and that gets me far enough to see a BSOD that reads verbatim...

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x025AAC20, 0xD0000009, 0x0000000000, 0xF8231AFF)

*** SCSIPORT.SYS - Address F8231AFF base at F8230000, DateStamp 45d6a099

I've tried Safe Mode and can't get it to load, the only thing that comes up that I can hit escape on to stop from loading is sptd.sys and it doesn't do anything by letting it load or disabling it. The last item I can see it load is "acpitabl.dat" and then it reboots.

I've set my BIOS to defaults to make sure no odd settings were causing an issue and as I said before, it's the most up to date version also.

I have an onboard SATA RAID, a PCI IDE Controller card and a PCI SATA Controller card.

Any suggestions that don't involve me reinstalling the whole OS?

If an add-on card, try yanking it and booting off the integrated

I do have some cheap-o PCI-X card in there to give it dual screen, I'll give it a shot, just curious, what leads you to think it's the video? Was it something from the error above?

I tried it but the same thing is happening.

This biggest issue I'm having is that I can't even get into safe mode or any sort of command prompt to do anything.

I can't even load up recover console as it gets a BSOD also.

Well that can't be good.

I can't even attempt to reinstall the OS, I get the same BSOD when trying to do that also.

WTF, how in the hell did installing SP2 do this?

SP2 shouldn't prevent a re-install, weird.

No other idears other than start tearing it apart.

CPU, RAM, mobo and see what happens

Odd that it'd happen, I literally only install a few windows updates, rebooted and then installed SP2 and this happened.

Such a PITA :(

I just want to stream my data to my MCE PC.

This topic is a better fit for the Operating Systems forum, so I'm moving it from Windows/PC Software to Operating Systems. Good luck with the weird problem!

Well I got it to boot.

I took off my PCI IDE controller, PCI SATA Controller and two SATA drives I had attached to the onboard SATA (using IDE for primary drive) and it booted!

Now to figure out where the issue lies.

Thanks for moving mechBgon!

Well I just uninstalled SP2, added back all the hardware I disconnected and was able to boot without any issues. So this was without a doubt related specifically to SP2.

It sounds like a problem with your drive controller, specifically the PCI SATA controller. If possible, update the firmware on that card and get the latest Windows Server 2003 drivers for it.

MSDN: Bug Check 0xD1: Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

As always, be sure to have recent backups of any important data.

Thanks I'll give it a go once I'm ready to reattempt SP2.

I always keep my OS drive completely separate of any valuable data anyways ;)

Be careful of that sptd driver. I upgraded my XP from SP1 to SP2, and had trouble with USB flash drives properly mounting their volumes. That driver doesn't like having an OS upgrade underneath it.

Btw, it's not an MS driver, it's a third-party driver, and it still has some compatibility problems. See my thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2069043&enterthread=y
