Installed SP2 ... now rig wont boot.

wtf? I did the Windows update deal with SP2, upon restarting ...well, it wont. Just keeps rebooting (unless in safe mode). I hate to have to format, and sys restore does not go far enough back. Anything I can do to fix this in safe mode?

If the system runs in Safe Mode, you might try just re-running the SP2 installer. Or uninstall it, reboot into Safe Mode again, and install it in Safe Mode. On long-established systems, I install SP2 in Safe Mode so it doesn't encounter resistance from security software or who-knows-what-else.

Here's Microsoft's info on uninstalling SP2 in the Recovery Console, if it comes to that: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;875355#XSLTH3124121123120121120120

HTH 🙂

System is pretty secure ... good av and safe web site procedures ... as to the updates, I go by the old rule

"if it works properly do not change it" ... except for minor updates ... SP2 has caused lots of trouble with
not working with older BIOS or then messing up Device Drivers ... now if I was reloading everything from
scratch, then I would probably give it a try .. I run Ghost every couple of months & if the system failed,
then I just do a Restore .. important data files are backed up regularly

SP2 hasn't caused lots of trouble with jack.

It's been out for what, 18 months now? If there are still compatibility issues, chances are the code that is incompatible is a piece of crap.

Safe habits are good, but they still only go so far. Keeping your system up to date is an important part of security models.

So ... SP2 is not perfect after all

I rest my case .. leave well enough alone
If it ain't broke, don't change it

But SP1 is broke. 😉 I left something valuable in the front seat of my car overnight, and it was still there in the morning (despite lots of car break-ins around here lately). By your logic, I should just keep doing that, because despite it being an obvious elevation of risk, nothing happened. Yet.

I do let windows check for and install critical updates ... I do not need the bother of SP2 at this time
Any my rig is always backup up thru Ghost .. so if it failed, just do a Restore and all is fine
Just another case of a bad os design to begin with ... don't know much about Linux or I might try it

lol, yeah it's the OS's fault. Exactly what does SP2 not installing have to do with the OS, professor?

Ghost won't help undo an identity theft resulting from a keystroke-logging Trojan. It won't un-infect the 20,000 other peoples' computers your non-SP2 system infects after catching a worm. It won't pull your documents and pics back out of the bad guys' hands after they've been FTP'ed off to Russia behind your back. Think it over, because pre-SP2 WinXP won't be supported forever and you will benefit from better security if/when you install it.

Like amdskip, I would take the time to do a fresh WinXP installation followed by an offline SP2 patching (from a CD or USB drive) if I were concerned about it messing up the system. But if you install it in Safe Mode, you won't have complications resulting from security software. Just check the system for viruses and spyware beforehand.

If it is going to screw up my rig so bad I cant boot, I dont need it. I have never had any problems with out it, just thought I would give it a shot, as the window update deal kept popping up (I know I can turn it off).

I was on a fresh install, but did not use a disk. Who knows.... 🙂

Why even bother doing that? Why not just Slipstream SP2 onto your WinXP install disc, so in the future, any and all WinXP installations ALREADY have SP2 installed seemlessly whenever you install WinXP. This also ensures you don't get a trojan, virus or spyware 3-seconds into your on-line installation of plain or SP1 WinXP (which WILL happen if you're connected to the net while installing a pre-SP2 version of Windows XP).

Just slipstream SP2 for all future installations.
