Installed OS onto SSD in IDE mode, trying to switch to AHCI

When I installed Windows on my Intel 320 120 GB SSD, I didn't know that you had to check to make sure SATA was configured to AHCI beforehand. After testing my SSD's performance, I noticed that its sequential write speed is pretty low compared to what other people seem to be getting. After doing some digging on the web, I saw that a common cause of this is that BIOS is set to IDE instead of AHCI. But when I switch to AHCI mode in BIOS, I get a BSOD upon boot up. I've read that it's possible to edit your registry to allow your computer to successfully switch over from IDE to AHCI. Is this possible? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
