installed new SATA drive...PROBLEMS galore

I installed an additional SATA HDD and it was working fine...for a few days.

All of a sudden, my computer begins to crash, and it cannot boot up while I have the new drive plugged in. I took it out, and and it boots up no problem.

Is there a specific reason for this? I have data on the new HDD and I would like to at least have the computer boot up with the 2 drives installed.

The OS is on the the Seagate 160gb.

I have XP
AMD 64 3400 duo
1 GB RAM
MSI neo platinum 4 mobo

WHen I said it cannot boot up...it goes to a screen where it says that a hardware/software change was detected, would you like to boot up in safe mode, last know good configuration, etc.

Sounds like a dead drive. I have had this happen before(in a much LOUDER fashion). You could try the freezer trick and see if that fixes things.

As I've said before - change the boot priority and make sure the Seagate is selected as Hard Drive #1.

I tried that, and it still gives me the same problem.

How do I know it's a dead drive, I got it less than 2 days ago...and it WAS working fine...

UNtil I tried to copy data from it to another HDD...it crashed my computer, and I had to do a manual restart...

What does the freezer trick do? Is it safe to plug in the drive once I get to the desktop?

It's used for mechanical problems and it doesn't sound like your problem. Put your drive in a USB enclosure and get your data, hopefully.

Will WD replace my HD? LIke I said...it WAS working before...

where do I get a USB enclosure...how much does that cost?

Out of curiosity change jumper on that WD Hard Drive for 1.5 SATA and see if that does the trick. Check Western Digital website in Support if ya need more info on jumper setting.

There aren't any jumpers on the WD, at least I don't think. It says that SATA drives don't use jumpers.

Will a USB enclosure fix anything? WHen I go straight to the BIOS, it shows that there is something plugged in...but it doesn't have a name...unlike my seagate which says something like STA123AS, something like that...

And again - check your connections carefully, make sure that you install the jumper limiting the operation to 150MB/s if necessary - maybe your MB does not recognize SATAII and 300MB/s..?

It should switch to slower operation automatically, but perhaps does not do it...? It's an older MB, correct...?

Not sure on chipset if that supports 3.0 sata, but yes WD hard drives have a jumper.
As said look @ website to see jumper settings.

I got it from Staples.

The thing is that it WAS working before...I connected it normally, with no problems, on mods on jumpers, etc.

There are no jumpers on the HDD, it didn't come w/ any.

There must be pins, you might have to get a jumper from the store... Or improvize something to short the 2 pins...

It sounds like it to me. I had a drive that suddenly started sounding like a vacuum cleaner. That went away and then it wouldn't boot with that drive connected anymore.

I see the diff. jumper settings....

SSC enabled (I don't think it's that one)
PM2 enabled (not this either)
OPT1 (this enables 150MB/s) I'll try this one....

I went into the BIOS< and it doesn't even list the SATA channel # being taken up...it only shows my Seagate.

It is possible to "damage" a HDD by doing a manual reboot???

What are my other options? I'm afraid of spending $$$ for an enclosure if I can't even get this drive to work via SATA.

what if I remove my seagate, and just try to install xp on the WD?

Try to switch the SATA connectors on the motherboard, and possibly use a different SATA cable.

It is also possible that your PSU is overloaded.

If you install XP on your WD now, you will definitely loose your data.

Looks like a bad drive afterall...

Did you connect the power to the WD...?

I just tried installing XP on it...swapping the seagate's cables, to eliminate cable issues...

I got blue screen...

So it sounds like a bad drive.

I can try to return it to Staples...or at least exchange it. But I no longer have the foam that came w/ it. I have the box, but not the foam...

You can try to retrieve your data with that enclosure from CompUSA... You can return it for a full refund when you don't need it anymore...

You mean my RAM? I think the RAM is fine. It will only test drives, it won't fix will it?
