Installed new motherboard and cpu, can't get internet connection working, help?

I just installed a new motherboard(Asus A8N-VM CSM) and cpu(X2 3800+). I can't seem to set up my internet connection properly. I thought I went through the setup correctly, but its not working. I have a broadband internet connection and a router. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

More details needed. What's not working (you need to be more precise than "the internet")? Does it see the network adapter (did you install the chipset drivers?) Can you ping/talk to the router? Do you know the router is actually working? Does it work if you bypass the router?

I don't believe I said "the internet" wasn't working. I said the connection isn't working, meaning I can't access the internet. But I will try to explain better. I installed the motherboard, and am using windows media center edition. I installed the chipset drivers, the network card and local area connection are both present in windows. I don't know how to ping/talk to the router. The router is working enough for me to use my laptop wirelessly to connect to the internet, and the router was working fine with the old system. I have also unplugged and replugged the modem back in. I am gonna do the same for the router now.

That's usually a good first thing to try; unplug everything, wait a minute or two, then plug back in the cable modem, wait for it to boot up, and then plug in the router. Sometimes this resets all the DHCP stuff and makes everything happy. You may need to reboot the desktop or 'repair' the connection at that point.

Also check that you're getting a green light on the NIC on the desktop, and a connection status light on that port of the router. That at least means there's power on each end of the connection...

If that won't work, try unplugging the router from the cable modem and just connecting the new desktop to it. Then go to the address of the router (usually http://192.168.1.1, but check the documentation to be sure), and/or try pinging that address (go to a command prompt and run 'ping 192.168.1.1', or whatever address it is). You should be able to view the router's configuration pages, or at least get a ping response from it. If that doesn't work, either the cable is bad, the NIC is broken, or the drivers weren't installed properly.

Is it an onboard ethernet from the MB, or a PCI NIC?

I had a problem once like this, turns out I forgot to turn network connection "ON" in the BIOS (if its onboard LAN)

Okay, it is onboard NIC, it is turned on in the BIOS. It has a orange light, which indicates the speed, and it should have a green light indicating it is connected. I don't see the green light, but it may be obscured by the bright orange light. The router is lit showing the connection. I pinged the router as instructed and it appears to work.

Not sure what the deal is, it appears to maybe be a problem with the NIC itself, but like I said, the ping seemed to work. Am I forgetting something in the setup. I went through the connection wizard and after its done it says the connection should be working. I tried repairing the connection with no change in results.


Just checked my manual again for the motherboard. The orange light is for connection speed, the other light can be either off-no connection, green-linked, or flashing-data activity. Mine is flashing, but it is flashing orange, or at least it appears orange, bit a differant color orange then the other light


Okay I tried to use the protable firefox I have on my usb flash drive. It seems to work some what. I can't get to every site I try and it seems slow, but I am able to type this right now from the computer I am working on. I cannot use windows update, nor can I activate windows via the internet, and internet explorer doesn't seem to work at all. But heres the real kicker. I have automatic updates turned on and it is downloading and installing the updates.

Actually it is still flasky, back to IE not working, still can't activate windows or see other p's on my network. But sometimes firefox works. I am gonna reinstall windows.

The problem seems to be caused by the nVidia Forceware network access manager. With it installed I have problems, without it, the stuff works fine. Is it important, or should I just forget about it?

I'm pretty sure that's their 'hardware' firewall... from reports, it seems to be pretty flaky overall. I'd leave it uninstalled if it's causing problems in your system.

Im having the same problem exept that Windows is telling me to activate or log off. I know my web is working because Im trying to solve the problem by Googling the answers on my PSP. Sorry for the bump, but can anybody help?

You should probably have posted this in another thread - probably no one will notice it here. Anyway, I am assuming you have activated your copy of windows?
