Installed new mobo/cpu - powering on computer and loading is slow

So I just installed a new mobo and cpu last night. I was hoping to power on to install Windows XP last night as well, but the computer took about 10 minutes just to get to the point where it is detecting my hardware. Detecting IDE connections etc. took forever. It was getting late, so I called it a day.

What should be my order of testing? I'm guessing it might be a hard drive issue?

how many IDE devices do you have? and what are they mixed with? cdrom and hdd on same IDE channel? both on primary channel? 4 total drives?

3 IDE devices, Primary belt had a harddrive on Master, no slave right now. Second belt has 2 CD-Roms, a CD burner on master, and a regular CD-Rom as slave.

- Make sure that your jumpers on the drives are set correctly and that the devices are in the correct positions on the cable.
- Check the cables. Try another set if you have some handy.
- Go into the BIOS setup and see if it is recognizing your drives.
- Is it looking for a floppy drive?
- Go into the BIOS and play with the options. See if any settings are unusual. Perhaps try resetting to defaults.

I read somewhere else about WD's having a Master with Slave setting, which I'm thinking (hoping) is the problem. I'll check in a few hours.

The cables should be fine, since I used the one that came with the new motherboard

Drive is recognized eventually (set to Auto in bios)

Will make sure floppy drive is set-up fine. Not 100% sure, but pretty sure it is.

I didn't really change any bios options yet. Jumpers on mobo should be ok. Had to change CPU clock jumper from 133 to 100 on mobo, but that's about it.

One time I accidentally installed a floppy cable backwards, and the symptoms were very similar to what you are experiencing. Perhaps try flipping the cable around.

Also, on some drives (I'm not sure about WD's) you can remove the jumpers and just connect the drive to the appropriate place on the cable.
