I got the parts for my new HSF yesterday finally (Thermalright SK6x, Akasa aluminum 60-80mm adapter, and Zalmin ZM-F1 fan) and built the HS yesterday.

Because the HS normally mounts a fan via clips, I ended up using (a minimal amount of) JB Weld to attach the adapter, then screwed the fan on top. I pulled off my old HSF (globalwin FOP38), popped the CPU off and cleaned the old thermal grease off with rubbing alcohol. I cleaned the heatsink surface, put some artic silver (no more than 1cm long) on the cpu die, and mounted everything.

XP booted up fine, not a problem in sight. I was about to post here declaring victory, when I got a BSOD. I checked in the bios, and it's reporting 63 degrees C for the CPU temp.

I am using the resister on the fan to drop the speed down (and the noise level) but it still should move about 20CFM. The heatsink doesn't feel overly warm, but that may not be the problem.

I hate to put the FOP38 back on, just because I don't want to be taking the HS on and off more than nessecary.

Any suggestions what to try? I'm about to pop off the resistor and see if that make a difference. It wont even boot into XP now for me though (posting from laptop)

Update:

Just removed the resistor, cpu temp is now 58.5 degrees C according to bios. I got it to boot into XP, but I am afraid to stay there long

Don't know what to say. Are you sure the fan is blowing onto the heatsink and not blowing air away from the heatsink? Also check that there are no large gaps in the duct between both the fan and heatsink. Other then that, not sure what else to say.
