First some info: I'm using WinXP Pro w/SP1, nForce2 motherboard with onboard audio enabled, and all the latest drivers and latest DirectX 9.0b.
Ok my mp3 player (Foobar 2000 v0.7.1) was working just fine until I installed the game Max Payne 2. That's when I noticed that i couldn't get it to play any of my mp3s anymore, nor any other audio files. The files show up in the playlist but they just don't play--the track counter never starts.
I've rebooted and reinstalled the mp3 player, that didn't work. Also, I installed Winamp (another mp3 player), that didn't work either! However, Windows Media Player works just fine, and so does a previous version of my Foobar mp3 player (this version wasn't installed, it's a self-contained program). They can both play any audio file just fine!
Also, I'm using the latest DirectX (v9.0b). However, i noticed that when i use its troubleshooting tool (dxdiag) to test my sound output, i can't hear anything. It gave me the following error:
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software)
So do you think the installation of Max Payne 2 is preventing Foobar and Winamp from working somehow? In the past i've had problems with games where i couldn't get any audio, but the audio in Max Payne 2 sounds just fine. (I don't want to have to uninstall Max Payne 2 and reinstall it again, because that probably wouldn't help.)
