installed irfanview... i want the standard windows icons back

i had a workaround for this before.. but seems that it is no longer working or i forgot it.

anyway, i installed irfanview, and i hate ALL of the icons the suite provides (roadkill, smiley faces, blahblahblah). i want my images to open in irfanview, but i want to maintain the windows default icons for images (bmp, jpg, gif, etc.)

how do i do this?

(and why can't i figure out the appropriate forum for this question?)

You have to set irfanview so it is not associated with the file type you're interested in restoring to default icon. Then make sure windows explorer is set to open files of that type with irfanview. That should let you keep the default icons and still open the files with irfanview.

Remove the association in irfanview by unchecking the check box next to the file type you want to restore to a default icon.

Also make sure irfanview is set to "load custom file types:" beneath the list of file types since some files won't be associated with irfanview.

i tried that. somehow, it doesn't seem to work....

i'll try again though. i'm hoping to do this without needing any software.

If the icon didn't revert to default after removing the association in irfanview then try going into windows explorer and for the file type click on the restore button to restore the open with back to the windows default. Then try changing open with back to irfanview after you confirm the icon went back to default.
