I installed a WD 250GB 7200 HD into my computer. It is set at slave, and the master is my old 80 GB HD. Performance when copying files to it is slow. Can anyone help me out? It takes around 20 min to copy 4 GB of info.
Put the drives on different channels! Only one drive can operate at a time on one channel. Best performance is always one drive per channel. Cheap controller that works well: Syba ~$22. shipped from dealsonic.com (if you need more channels).

Hey. I only have 2 of those cables. 1 is used for both my DVDR and DVD drives. The other is used for both my harddrives. So I just need to get a controller card?
You don't have to, but the Syba card (which is two channel and can run any IDE drive ever made) comes with more cables if you decide to go that route.
. For now, just put one HD and one optical on each channel. Best if they can all operate at least UltraATA-66. If any are DMA2 or PIO, then best to isolate those on their own channel(s). Try to put the most frequent target optical drive on opposite channel from source drive.

Well, if you only have two cables, you can just disconnect your CD drives, boot up, transfer files, power back down, and replace the cables accordingly. 🙂
