Installed Graphics Card, But Doesn't Output to Monitor. Onboard Video Works, Though

Just bought an r9 290x on sale from Newegg. Tried installing it today and ran through the usual graphics card replacement preparation (uninstall old drivers, install, reinstall drivers again). I was replacing a 5870.

When I plug in everything back, the computer turns on, the video card is definitely on (the fans are spinning), but when I connect via the HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI, nothing will output. When I plug into onboard video instead, it works (HDMI, VGA, DVI). Any idea as to what's happening? I really don't want to have to return this if I don't need to.

Current setup and PSU should be able to handle the card:
- Corsair 620 Watt HX Modular supply 80 PLUS Certified
- i5-4570 Haswell with Coolermaster hsf
- 12gb Ram
- AsRock H97M Pro4 Motherboard
- 1x 256 SSD Drive
- 2x 2tb hard disks
- Use of 8 USB ports

Make sure it's fully seated in the slot. Change the bios to use PCIe first. Those are the first two that come to mind. Check the external power connectors are plugged in fully also?

Check in the BIOS if the IGP doesn't have priority over a PCI Express Video Card. You can select there if you want to rely first on the IGP for booting (Which is what it seems yours is doing).
However, keep in mind that once Windows take over, it may overrule that and switch to the discrete Video Card without cloning the output to the IGP. So if you see that it boots, then you notice it is working and has sound but you see no video output after Windows loads, switch back the Monitor to the Video Card.

had the same issue when I got a R9 290 where fans spin, didn't display anything, and when I booted with IGP, Windows 7 show it detected the R9 290

tried mobo updates & resetting BIOS back to defaults, but it still black displayed while fans spin

eventually I put the R9 290 into an older mobo and it displayed fine

put it back into my PC and made damn sure the PCI-E connectors were fully inserted and it displayed fine

You know its always the little things we end up missing; like listening for the click on the pci-e connectors; or connectors from the PSU :D

Good suggestions here. I have also seen posters report that performing a clear CMOS did the trick.

Thanks everyone. Wasn't sure what to try so I did everything, and it worked! Must have been the magic of Anandtech that did the trick

Silly question, is the GPU plugged in? I once forgot to put the PCI-E plugs into mine lol

PS- oops solved... I need coffee.

Had the same thing when I bought my GTX970 a few months back. Motherboard just needed a BIOS update and I was on my way.
