I used apt-get and synaptic to install all the latest Gnome files, but I don't know how to access 1.8. I thought that 2.8 would replace my old version, but it still says 2.4 whenever I load up Gnome. I followed the instructions on how to do this update here: http://www.tuxme.com/index.php...cat=40&go=news.php

When I select the session type before I log in, there is no other option for Gnome 2.8 or anything. I also installed some other window managers that I similarly can't find.

Also, I can't seem to launch any programs I installed(such as synaptic or firefox) without logging in as root. Is it safe to use the root account all the time? How do I make my other user accounts be able to run these programs without giving me errors(I'll elaborate on them if you like)?
