Installed Delphi the hard way.

Aaargh!

I got this old license from eBay just to be legal. Proceeded to Install and Installation dies with a 'Merge Failed" message.

It only installed 10% of the files. I had to maually copy all files to the correct destination and manually registering some dll's. Finally got it working


I just wonder what that error message means?

Wow, that's some old stuff. I doubt Borland would have been too offended if you hadn't been entirely legal

I worked with Delphi 6 a few years ago and found the platform to be quite prone to these random errors, it's quite a complicated little ah heck. Excellent language though. I have no idea what they've been doing for .NET but I hope to see it sometime and I hope it hasn't changed too much.

How come you're installing such an old one?

I can't afford to buy the latest and greatest. and it works just fine for my needs.

To clarify a bit more:

I have a small application that many have asked me to sell to them. It was made with Delphi 4 Standard with the limitation that I could not legally sell any applications I developed with it. The Delphi 4 Pro was the cheapest way to be legal.

I have tried Delphi 6 Personal and a few newer versions but the price for those are too high and the features of the new ones are not needed.

I really like the language and RAD environment. It compiles to .exe without the need for RunTime modules and other extra crap. It's easy to understand and not as cryptic as some C/C++ can be.
Highly recommend it. Borland also offers free Personal editions on their website. The limitation is you can not create comercial applications with it (legally).
