installed app was able to send an email despite firewall (zone alarm free)?

i installed a new app that i was trying out.
when i first ran it, it tried to call home, so i blocked it with zone alarm free.
after that, it offered to send an email to my email account about purchase offers.
i clicked yes, just to test it.
and, to my surprise, i got an email.

questions:

how did it get through zone alarm?

how can i block it in the future?

should i try a new firewall (sygate or kerio)?

Boy, that really is news.

It probably used your default email app to send the email.

Uninstall it.

They're both free so why not give them a try.
