Installed and overclocked my new P3-S 1.26!!

This Thread in D/C tells all about it.

For those who just want the goods here...

P3-S 1.26ghz w 512K cache in an ASUS CUSL2-C running the 1014c bios

I found a better / less expensive Tualatin - socket 370 adapter HERE that also solved the problem I had on this board when I snapped off the little lugs for mounting heatsinks. THis adapter comes with it's own socket - new lugs to mount the heatsink! And I didn't break them this time!!!
BTW, if you get this adapter - don't trust the instructions. I first set it up with the jumpers for the intel chipset - no boot. CHanged it to the settings for the Via chipset, then it worked like a charm. These guys also have many other good deals, I ordered stuff on Friday and it showed up in the post office priority shipped on Monday. Everything I ordered came just as advertised.

So - here is the scoop:

It runs like a dream at 155 FSB, CAS 2-2-2 & 5/7 timings, for 1.472Ghz
Sandra says it beats a P4 2ghz on the cpu benchmark.
Seti times beat out my AMD XP1800+ by a few minutes / WU 😀😀😀

The cool part is this was an easy upgrade, no OS reinstall, everything works just as before only much faster! Oh - and I can sell the P3 700e @ 933 to defray the cost of the upgrade & I bought the new cpu here on the Anand FS forum so I didn't even have to pay full price 😀

Do you have any pics of benchmarks?
I would like to see a P3 beat a P4 😀
Sounds like you have a sweet system there 🙂
nice upgrade

As far as I know, all xUSL2 boards have a bug where the cas timings go to slowest and AGP goes to 2X @ 140 and above FSB. There is a hacked bios available from X86-secret.com that fixes it.

A PIII @ ~ 1.5 GHz (or Tually Celeron) will bench higher in Sandra CPU than a P4 2 GHz.

I had the 1014c bios installed, but just in case it also has the bug I just installed the tweaked 1012c.

Oldfart - what a mistake that was 🙁

I went from a perfectly stable system running really well to BSOD's including "Inaccessable Boot Device" and others.

What a royal PITA!!! :|

Reflashed to 1014c and pure golden stability came right back 😀 😀 😀

Guess the tweaked bios isn't for everybody!

Hmm. I used several versions of it with no problems. It solved the lockup caused by the AGP2X and improved my scores. Maybe it is a problem when running a Tually conversion? What ram timings did you use? 2-2-2 5,7 may not be actually possible @ 155 FSB (likely not). Remember, the normal bios slows all of them down. CPUz should be able to tell you actual mem timings and AGP rate.

THanks, I got it.

Yes, it says my Tras/Trc is at 7/9 not 5/7 like I set it in bios.
Also I saw in Sandra it says my AGP is 2X, not 4X like it says in bios.

Wiz - Welcome to PIII-S World. What a great CPU, huh? I'm running two PIII-S 1.4Ghz's as we speak. It's a hidden Gem in CPU-land. Mine kick some serious butt even at 133FSB, I wish I had the RAM to be able to OC to 150+ FSB. What RAM are you using?

That is the bug. Since you are running 155 FSB, you probably can't run 2-2-2 5,7 anyway unless you have some very good ram. In my case, the inability to run any 3D apps on my GF3 made it a must for me to use the hacked BIOS. If this is not a probem for you, the regular BIOS will do.

Oldfart, yeah that's what I thought. I may load the hacked bios and try to get one of the other advantages but leave Tras/Trc at 7t/9t for stability.

CPUz tells me it's running CAS 2-2-2 so that's a plus 😀

RalfHutter, I just don't remember what the ram is. I know it was advertised as 256 meg CAS2 PC133. Obviously I'm pretty happy with it.
I think the last time I removed it I saw a Crucial sticker. CPUz identifies it as Ti ram.

In case anybody wants to know, my Seti times with this rig range between 3hrs 5mins up to 3 hrs 42mins.
This beats my AMD XP1800+ by about 9 minutes per WU. 😀

Wow, this sounds like an awesome upgrade! Can you feel the difference? I too have a p3 700 but its overclocked to 1000 on an Asus Cusl2. How much did this upgrade cost? I'm interested =)

Just to make sure you know, PIII Tualatin CPUS' with the 512k cache (S version) are NOT cheap. Newegg has the 1.26ghz for around $160-170. You can probably get an OEM off Ebay for around $100-120 (that's where I got two of them but they were even cheaper😉)
The 1.4ghz ones are more than $200 retail. Pound for pound (er, I mean clock for clock), they are more powerful than P4's.

You can find them on AnandTech FS forum if you search, that's where I bought mine. Not a lot of them, but watch and they do come up 😉

I paid about $16 for the adapter and $100 for the cpu. I sold my P3 700e for $50.
This is part of a larger upgrade, here is the whole deal so far.

Sold (or selling)
P3 700e - $50
P3 1000 Slot 1 SECC2 100fsb w/ P3125 dual fan alpha cooler (maybe $150?)

Bought & installed
P3 1.26 512k: $100
adapter: $16
Celeron: 1.1A $40
adapter: $20

Total spent: $176
Total hopefully sold: $200 (maybe - if I'm lucky)
