Installed 7800 GTX and now I can't select 1280x960?

The native res on my LCD is 1280x1024. Before I switched over to my GTX I was able to run 1280x960 and 1152x864. Now those resolutions aren't even listed. I've now got three resolutions I can select; 1280x1024, 1024x768, and 800x600.

Why can't I select these other resolutions?

Also, I went into BF2 and I can no longer select any res over 1024x768.

This is really starting to suck and I'm starting to miss my x800xtpe.

I think you need to fix your monitor driver in XP, it is not recognizing that your LCD can display those or download a modded driver or Ultramon to unlock those resolutions.

You had an X800XT PE and upgraded?

I have to agree, what was the purpose of the upgrade?

Ok, this is kind of crap we can do without. Now, when people make posts talking about how much ATI or nVidia owns the other, a little bit of threadcrapping may be excusable. However, if someone asks for help, regardless of their hardware choices, people should either help or be silent. If evey thread turns into a flamewar, this forum will quickly become useless.

Thanks for the lecture dad.

The only resoulution you should be using is 1280x1024, so I don't know why you care about the other resoulutions. As for BF2, I have no idea. Download the latest drivers for your monitor and nvidia.

Sounds like you need a vacation already.

First, you are crazy to upgrade when you only have a 1280 x 1024 monitor. If you had a bigger monitor, then it may have been worth the money....

OK, with that out of the way, you should be able to go advanced properties in the hardware driver and add the resolutions you want, such as 1280 x 960. Also, go to the monitor tab and make sure to uncheck "Hide Resolutions that this monitor doesn't Support".

I use 1280 x 960 for a lot of older games - works great. Make sure to set the monitor scaling to "Fixed Aspect Ratio" for best results.

Wow.. crappy upgrade.

You'll pretty much get exactally the same performance as you did with your x800XTPE.

Researching is good my friend, you just blew away $600. x800XTPE at that resolution would have been fine for a while yet.

The reason I run 1280x960 is because it is a 4:3 resolution. Also, that's the max res BF2 lets me run.

Yes my monitor is 1280x1024 5:3 but that doesn't mean I have to run it at that resolution. If I turn off the scaling then 1280x960 looks fine. The black bars on top and bottom don't bother me at all.

For those that think I shouldn't have upgraded. I upgraded to get better performance out of BF2. With my X800XTPE I had to turn off dynamic shadows and dynamic lights and run the game at 1152x864 to get good frame rates. With the 7800 GTX I can turn everything on high and it doesn't even blink.

Now back to my problem. So you guys think it has something to do with my LCD driver?

Well, I installed the latest monitor driver and I still can't get any resolutions except 1280x1024, 1024x768, and 800x600.

Now this is really strange because I had no problem running those resolutions on my X800XTPE.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried adding 1280x960 as a custom resolution in your video drivers?

How do I do that?

If I uncheck "Hide modes this monitor can't display it gives me all kinds of resolutions beyond 1280x1024 and all kinds below but it skips any resolution between 1280x1024 and 1024x768.

For some reason 1280x960 and 1152x864 are not there. This is really driving me nuts. It has to have something to do with NVDIA's display driver.

Should be under the "Custom resolutions and refresh rates" section of the same page in the drivers where you'd change resolution/refresh rate.

Yeah, 1280x960 and 1152x864 are not listed.

I'm going to hook my kids monitor up to my computer and see what happens.

Thanks,

Can't you just add the resolution in? Nvidia has a great tool to just create custom resolutions...

Oh man thanks a lot! I found the custom res tab and it worked!! I can now use those other two resolutions! This was driving me nuts! Still would like to know why those resolutions were not shown automatically.

Anyway, now I can get back to stress testing this thing. So far I'm real happy with the performance. BF2 is as smooth as glass with everything maxed out!

Yeah soory I would have said how to do it in my original post but I don't have any NVidia hardware ATM so I don't quite remember the steps.

HF with your new working set up.

Next time spend more on the monitor, and less on the video card. A good monitor should last longer than 3 video cards. They don't depreciate in value as much as video cards either.

I actually thought the 172x WAS a good monitor.

I'd like to move up to a 1600x1200 if I could find one I like. I don't want to go to a 20" screen so I'm waiting for 17 or 19" screens to come out in 1600x1200.
