INstallation problem with XP

Im in the process of reinstalling WinXP after switching a bunch of components in my system.

Im keeping the HD though, it has one system partition which I reformat whenever I reinstall for some reason, and one data partition which has everything but the OS on it.

Now, when I removed the OS partition, setup was nice enough to rename the former D: to C:.

So basically I either need to rename my old D: to D: again, or I can wipe my data partition and do it all over again, or I can have XP installed on XP.
The latter is out of the question, doing it all over is something I'd definately like to avoid since that will leave me with a crapload of data recovery to do.

So, is there any way to rename partitions in the setup?

Am I the only one getting the feeling that MS is trying real hard to make Windows work against it's users rather that with them?

I really wish they'd make more games for Linux so I could just skip all this BS :|

I believe that once you start the install, you will be able to tell XP to install in the 'Unused Space'. Then it should assign that partition 'C'. I've never done this, so your on your own.

I had the same problem and yes....there is a way to do it. I had to boot into linux (vi an install CD) and create a partition where the old "C" partition used to live and set it to "bootable" and take the bootable flag off the second partition.

Well Im solving it as I write this, I simply popped another HD in there and Im now copying the contents of the D: slice to this drive.

Will take me a while, but its an easy way with pretty much no risk of anything getting messed up.

Thanks for the tips peeps.

And thanks M$ for all the great OS's you keep push.. blessing us with.
