This is what happened to me today. I bought a brand new heatsink with fan for my socket A athlon 900mhz cuz the old fan stopped working. So I took out the old heatsink, and put in the new one which already had the thermal paste on it. Everything worked fine, I rebooted the computer, and I tried to get in the bios, and right after I press the "Del" button, I get a black screen with a blue line at the bottom of the screen, and a blinking underscroll at the top of the screen, and it just freezes there.
So then i reboot few more times, i can see the intro screen where it tells me to all my IDEs, but it will just go to the same black screen when i press DEL. Then i restarted without going to the Bios, and it booted into windows xp fine. So i was thinking maybe my Bios is messup, let me take out the battery and reset it. So i did that, still have the same Bios problem. So I thought maybe i didnt align the heatsink right with the CPU, so I took it out and put it back on again. And this time, my computer dont even boot up anymore. It still powers up with all the IDEs, but nothing comes on the monitor !
I'm thinking i either fried the cpu, or the motherboard is acting up. So i took the heatsink out, and cleaned everything and put on brand new thermal paste, and put it back in again. Now when i bootup, i started to get this beeping sound from the PC like every 2 secs, which freaked me out. So I kept trying to turn it back on and off every few mins, and sometimes there is the beeping sound and sometimes there isn't, but the monitor just never comes on anymore.
So i'm suspecting either the CPU is fried, or a problem with the mobo. Really need all the help I can get to fix this, or just identify the problem cuz i really dont know which part is dead. How does one know if the CPU is dead anyway? What does that beeping sound mean? What else can I possibly do to fix this up?
Here is my system spec:
Abit KT7 (non-raid) with Athlon 900mhz
350 watts ps
Liteon 16x DVD
Liteon 16x CDRW
Maxtor 60GB, 80GB
ATI AIW Radeon 32mb DDR
Acer 56k Modem
Realtek ethernet card
SB Live! 5.1 PCI
Win XP
Btw, the system with working fine before I made the heatsink switch =(
