I just bought a couple OEM Duron 700Mhz chips and two GlobalWin FOP38's to go w/ them. I have installed quite a few processors before, but they were all retail. I just used the heatsink that came attached.

Can somebody explain the best way to apply my thermal compound and install the heatsink/fans?

thx

It is suggested that you flex the clip before installation to get it a little loser and make the job a little less stressful. You first lay a very thing layer of artic silver or whatever thermal paste your using. Although some people have better luck w/a little thicker layer. Then clip the side of the clip that doesn't hinge. Then level off the heatsink on the processor and then clip the other side w/the hinge. There will be a lot of force. I was able to do this w/just my fingers but it hurt A LOT. So you might want to use a screw driver or something. But I thought it was very simple and I used a FOP38 and T-Bird 900.

<edit>I attached the fan to the heatsink afterwards just so it didn't get in the way</edit>

Do it BEFORE installing the motherboard into the case. It's much easier when you have a little room to work with. And as hubbs said, level the heatsink before trying to attach the other side of the clip. Don't ever push down on the heatsink itself.

If the FOP38's have that thermal compound already on them that looks like tape (phase change compound) use that, everybody seems to get good performance with it and it's a pain to clean off.

I took off the pad using a pen cap and then got the residue off using goo gone. Then I cleaned the surface using rubbing alcohol. Applied a thin layer of arctic silver to my p3 core. Then follow the steps below.

1. Hold the heatsink level and steady.
2. Use a flathead screwdriver and push down on the clip inside the fan (between fan blades) so as to use the fan as a guide for the screwdriver (so the screwdriver doesn't come crashing into the mobo).
3. Use a finger to attach the retention clip using hinge once you have the clip pushed low enough by the screwdriver.

Got the heatsink attached within 20 secs using this procedure. It works the best.
